A Valuable Public Service Resource |
|||
|
Marine Archaeological Research and Conservation (MARC) is designed to be a resource for governmental and research oriented organizations dedicated to expanding the marine archaeological record and conserving submerged cultural resources. MARC members have each completed specialized educational curriculums and have been certified by the The Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society of Washington DC as capable of assisting graduate principle investigators in the field in in training volunteer and interested groups towards this goal. MARC is very proud to be designated as the South Florida First Response Team for the State of Florida Division of Historical Resources. In this capacity, MARC is dispatched to new public discoveries of shipwrecks or other submerged cultural resources. Our specific role is to gather as much non-disturbance data as possible such as hi-res video, photos, drawings and recorded statements and dispatch them immediately to State Archaeologists in Tallahassee who will respond accordingly. It is our pleasure and design to extend the reach and service of our State's Division of Historical Resources in the protection of submerged cultural resources in South Florida with timely and accurate responses in the field. The MARC team also presents a lecture and video series at related symposiums such as the South Florida Anthropological Society (SFAS) and the Florida Anthropological Society (FAS). Topics have included our work at many shipwreck and submerged cultural sites such as the Vamar and Lofthus wrecks which have been nominated as Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserves (U.A.P.). In addition, MARC makes itself available to provide cost-effective remote sensing and cultural resource surveys that meet DEP and DHR requirements. Our team was instrumental in the development of new user interface software for accurate and dependable magnetic anomaly detection in marine target areas. |
